6 Questions to Ask at Freshman Orientation - TutorNerds
6 Questions to Ask at Freshman Orientation - TutorNerds Tips From an Irvine College Tutor: 6 Questions to Ask at Freshman Orientation Recent high school graduates will undoubtedly be excited to attend their freshman orientation at the college of their choice. All of this information in conjunction with a recent graduation can become overwhelming rather quickly. However, its really important for students to ask the right questions and gain valuable information that can make their first year easier. Also, students are encouraged to take advantage of the social aspect of freshman orientation by getting to know potential classmates, roommates, and teaching staff. Its also a great idea to write down some of these crucial questions to avoid forgetting something at the last minute. 1. Do I need to take any prerequisites? The first thing a freshman needs to think about is whether or not they will need to take prerequisite courses. In many cases, students need to take one course before they are accepted into another. Examples include English 1A and 1B or Chemistry 101 and Chemistry 102. Its important for students to know that they cannot sign up for the second course before they take the first course. Students who fail to take the prerequisite during the fall term will have to wait an entire year before they can sign up for it again. During orientation, new students are strongly encouraged to learn about prerequisites in general (READ: 5 ways to learn about art this summer). 2. Do I sign up for courses individually or for a freshman package? Some universities offer a freshman package meaning that new students are automatically enrolled in four courses that fulfill general education requirements. This can be beneficial because students dont have to worry about signing up for individual classes or getting a specific time or day that might already be full. On the other hand, if students have already chosen their major field of study a package deal might not work. Itâs best for students to ask about this before the day they register for classes so they can make an informed decision. Students who sign up for courses individually will need to make sure they have a first and second choice in case they get locked out of their original course. 3. What happens if I get locked out of a course I really need? Nearly every college freshman will be locked out of at least one of the courses they need to take. When this happens, the students can either take a second or third choice course that fulfills the same requirement or waits to take that course until the next term. Students who are overly choosy may find that it takes them five or six years to earn a four-year degree, so its better to have alternate choices prepared ahead of time. It can be very frustrating to be locked out of a course, but students should rest assured that this happens to most people, and it works out in the end. 4. Where will I be living in relation to my classes? Another thing students should focus on is where they will be living about their classes. This can help them plan their schedule as well as their social activities. In many cases, the dorms will be located on the opposite side of campus. This means students will have to plan ahead of time to either walk or bike across campus. Students should also have a plan for getting home at night and for any social activities that occur throughout the week (READ: 5 Reasons to get an in-home Irvine tutor this summer). 5. Are there any social activities geared towards freshmen? Nearly every university has some social activities planned specifically for freshmen. This will give new students an opportunity to meet one another, make new friends, and work on general social networking. However, if students miss these activities, they might find that theyre a little late to the game when it comes to socialization. Get a list of these activities straight away and attend as many of them as possible. 6. Who can I get in contact with if I have questions later on? Almost everyone will forget to ask one or two important questions at orientation. Itâs important to get a business card or the contact information of one or two people who work for the University who can answer questions later on. If possible, get a direct number or an extension for somebody rather than the front office number, which requires countless menu options and sends callers to a voicemail box. Handy Guide to Your Medical School Admissions Interview
Handy Guide to Your Medical School Admissions Interview Diligent Preparation: The Road to Successful Healthcare Admissions Interviews Preparation is a students greatest ally when it comes to admissions Interviews. A personal interview is the final frontier you must conquer to career entry preparation with a postgraduate medical education. Admissions committees are quite impressed by extensive extracurricular activities and high standardized test scores and GPAs. However, committee members must see candidates with their own eyes in face-to-face meetings to come to their final decision . (Read: Medical School Ranking by Difficulty of Admissions) Chief reason for these personal interviews is that doctors, pharmacists and dentists must have good bedside manner, OTC charm, and chair side demeanor to give patients in distress the best possible care. Superb interpersonal skills are also essential to effective peer collaborations and efficient staff communications. In fact, such skills are so critical that schools use a standardized tool for facilitation of candidate pool elimination called multiple mini interviews. Dental, medical, and pharmacy school interview preparation: the basics Dental, pharmacy and medical school admissions interview preparation is easy if planned well. A common mistake that many applicants make is wasting time to memorize stale replies to common queries. Two examples are, Why do you want to practice medicine? or Why did you apply to our pharmacy program? Rapid delivery of planned replies hurts more than it helps, as healthcare experts quickly recognize staged performances. Thus, your main goal must be to spark conversation rather than elicit memorization. Honing this craft also comes in handy for spontaneous questions. Thus, the best idea is stating general ideas in broad but true terms. In other words, speak like you mean it. Question prediction + proper diction = necessary part of interview preparation With the above goal in mind, its strongly advised to devise questions well ahead of time. Focus on the most likely subjects and make a list of major sub-points. For instance, a good strategy for medical school interview preparation is review why you want to study medicine. Mentally reflect on primary motivations and commit them to memory in a flexible format. Avoid rehearsed lines that are designed to impress but fail to address the real underlying issues. However, one must never forget to phrase natural responses that sound like normal conversation â" not defending doctoral dissertations or courtroom litigation. Preparing for surprise questions can be a bit tricky, but the biggest trick is to prevent underselling yourself. For example, an ideal task for great dental school interview preparation is to think of what you will say if asked about Obamacare limits on reasonable and customary orthodontic fees. Still, another excellent study subject for dental school interview preparation is meth mouth, a new sub-specialty developed to treat characteristic oral decay from chronic methamphetamine abuse. If youre asked about something youre unfamiliar about, take a deep breath to collect your thoughts and give the best truthful answer. (Read: Should medical school applicants take MCAT now, before it gets harder?) Interview Guide Its crucial to understand that cramming for final exams is quite different from medical, dental, and pharmacy school interview preparation. Go through the systematic guide below prior to in-person meetings with admissions personnel: Review your list of commonly asked questions and practice answers by speaking aloud. Consult a dictionary to minimize repetition, but dont memorize complete sentences and paragraphs! Jot down knee-jerk responses that require no prior research and then analyze comprehension, precision, correct grammar and concision. Conduct at least some cursory research into the most relevant and latest developments. For instance, healthcare is currently amid a huge paradigm shift from standardized protocols to innovative clinical interventions. Thus, medical school interview preparation should include a basic-orientation to both team collaboration and independent research technologies. Peruse news reports and scholarly publications for controversial topics typically discussed during medical, dental or pharmacy school interviews. Common examples include, assisted suicide, human clinical experimentation subjects, robotic surgeries and genetic engineering. Get a grasp of U.S. healthcare reform as it pertains to your chosen career path. Competent pharmacy school interview preparation could include an investigation of mandatory Obamacare generic equivalents to proprietary prescription drugs. Likewise, look up new federal regulations that mandate real-time supply chain documentation and create sensations among pharmaceutical distributors. What to do when interview day finally arrives Mild anxiety and jittery nerves are perfectly normal when facing such an important interview. Thats why you must substitute stress with self-esteem with a constant reminder that you did something to be under the spotlight! Stay cool, calm, and collected Never let your guard down while waiting around to be interviewed. Some schools purposely inconvenience or confuse applicants with long waits or vague directions. This is done to observe how well applicants will function under pressure of actual practice on real patients. Practice the Three Ps Be pleasant, polite, and professional. For instance, utilize a firm handshake, bright smile and direct eye contact when you initially meet the interviewer(s). Body language conveys far more candor and volume than impeccable grooming and flawless grammar. If you must argue your opinion, be polite If asked your opinion about a particular issue, offer polite input only. Should it elicit a strong rebuttal, dont back down. Stay calm and respectfully disagree by supporting your position with proven facts, sound logic, and empirical stats. Quality pharmacy, medical, and dental school interview preparation goes two ways Medical school admissions interviews often conclude when candidates are asked if they have any questions. Many applicants wonder what to say or whether to speak at all. The former approach is preferred to demonstrate interest in their institution. Visit the schools official website to view details about imminent changes with direct impact on your desired program. Avoid generalized subjects like standardized board certification passage and residency placement rates. Instead, pose courteous, yet probing, inquiries into the newly constructed state-of-the-art simulated training lab, additional specialty concentrations and study abroad. Niche practice ops like rural healthcare or geriatric clinical internships, are also good topics. We hope this list was helpful starting point for your admissions interview prep. Look, this part of the process is crucial, so its best you dont do it alone. A private, one-on-one Orange County medical consultant will give you an advantage over your peers. Dont wait to call. College Dining
College Dining The college dining halls will be one of the biggest differences from your life at home. However, different does not always live up to its awful connotation. Dining halls are not exactly filled with retired chefs and grandmas who love you, and sometimes the food is not good. However, it is part of the college experience, and it is something you will be able to overlook. Allergies can be an issue in the dining halls. Essentially, you will not know what is possibly in whatever they may be making; so tell the workers your allergies because they will know. That is one of the most important aspects to remember about the dining halls. Dining halls also offer many options for food. Dining halls will most likely have a fresh salad and fruit bar and a deli. Your dining hall should offer options for vegetarians. Also, dining halls will likely have hamburger, hot dog and chicken fingers for more options. However, the main course of dining halls will expand your culinary knowledge. Most of the items will cease to exist on menus at normal restaurants, and at times they may even be difficult to pronounce. You might even find yourself asking a dining hall employee yeah, that stuff, can I have some of that. The dishes may be something foreign that you cant quite pronounce, and it might not be the best food in the world. However, its a chance to try new food for no additional cost. Think of your dining hall as a cheap buffet. There are a lot of options and most of them will be bad. However, with that many choices youre bound to like something every night. There will be food that is just too terrible for raccoons to even smell. Yet, there will be something you can eat to fill up on every day. Quantity is a big positive at the dining halls. There is virtually no limit to the amount of food you can eat. Your college may have multiple dining halls with different menus every night, enhancing the options available. Some dining halls even specialize in vegetarian food, healthy food, fast food, fish, etc. However, for the most part, the dining halls are not extremely healthy or nutritious. You can pursue a healthy diet through the dining hall; however, the main courses are not the healthiest. A lot of schools also offer options with meal plans. Some schools allow students to use meal plans in markets to buy groceries, others offer food you can pick up, others allow students to use the meals in affiliated restaurants, etc. Most schools offer different types of meal plans in terms of how many meals a week and extra options. You should research your schools meal plans thoroughly before buying one. Beverages are one of the dining halls strong points. They will have enough juices and sodas available everyday to make your dentist squeal, or keep them all employed during the recession. And you can even grab three or four sodas at once if you want to. Also, the salad and fruit bars are well maintained at dining halls. Deli, fruit and salad bars and cereal are the items that are likely to be available at every meal. So, you and the Capn can make it happen at any meal. Again, this gives students options. If a dining hall is serving German Goulash for a day - and the charcoal from the grill sounds more appetizing then students can all chime in with Rice Krispies, making the dining hall sound like the 4th of July. Exception, the deli is usually closed for breakfast. Most dining halls offer breakfast, lunch and dinner and are open seven days a week. However, some are closed on weekends. The best part about the dining hall is not doing dishes, unless you work there. You simply eat your food, and put your tray into the kitchen; then you can return to your reign as NFL Blitz champion, or whatever else you do. A regular trip to the dining hall takes anywhere from 20-60 minutes, depending on how crowded it is, and how much you want to eat. Essentially, eating at the dining hall is not like a home-cooked meal. The dining hall chefs dont know your favorite ingredients, and how you love cinnamon on everything. And if they did know, they would not care. The dining halls are not as bad as you might think, and they will have a plethora of food to choose from. So, you will surely find something edible. Who knows, your dining halls might actually serve good food. You should ask people currently at the school you will be attending about the food. They will give you an honest answer.
Why you should consider management style when choosing your next job - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Why you should consider management style when choosing your next job - Introvert Whisperer Why you should consider management style when choosing your next job A bad manager is one of the most commonly cited reasons for people being unhappy in their jobs. Nobody likes to feel overworked, undervalued, or unappreciated by the person in charge. However, having the right manager can be a very positive thing. The right guiding influence at the right time has been instrumental for plenty of people who have been coached or inspired to achieve great things in their careers. Whilst you cannot cherry-pick your perfect manager, most of us have at least some idea of how we like to be managed. Iâll run through a few different types of management styles, then offer some practical advice on how to make the right choice. 1. The hands-on motivator style This management style works best for people who like having someone else there to provide drive and structure. Perhaps you struggle with self-motivation, or simply find it reassuring to know that somebody more experienced is nearby for help if things go wrong. The only problem with this style is when it goes too far and descends into micromanagement â" nobody likes to feel like theyâre under the thumb or not trusted to do their job. As you become more confident in your own abilities in a new role, you may want your manager to take a step back and give you space to develop. 2. The guiding mentor style Everyone learns from experience, and even those of us who prefer to work independently had to learn some skills from others. A guiding and mentoring manager could be a fast-track route to becoming highly skilled in your chosen career â" if youâre willing to learn from them and take their advice. You need to be able to react well to constructive criticism and be open to learning from others for this to be a good option. Some prefer having the space to make their own mistakes and learn in that way, which is fine too. Most people have at least some worthy advice of life experience to offer though, so donât be too quick to rule out working with someone who is keen to help you grow. 3. The keep your distance style Perhaps youâre the type of person who prefers to get on with things independently, and the idea of somebody keeping an eye on your work at all is stressful. This was always the category I found myself in when working office-based jobs â" I always wanted to get on with things and then only ask for help if I needed it. Bear in mind that this kind of relationship with a manager is built on trust, so that trust will usually have to be earned over time. Itâs not always realistic to expect to be trusted to work independently straight from the first day. Youâll also need to be proactive when seeking help and constructive feedback from this type of manager, and be a good judge of when itâs the right time to ask for help. 4. The nowhere to be seen style Maybe in your eyes, the best manager is one that is never seen at all. Iâve worked for people who are barely in the country, let alone the office. Whilst this may sound appealing, but keep in mind that if something does go wrong, the responsibility will likely be on your head. Itâs also worth considering that itâs very hard to build a meaningful relationship with a manager like this, so when it comes to wanting something from them or needing their support, you may not be in the strongest position. 5. What about yourself? With so much work moving online, it is easier than ever for people to have successful and fulfilling self-employed careers. The pros and cons of being self-employed is a whole other discussion in itself, but for the purpose of this topic, itâs worth remembering that youâre never truly without a boss. Youâll still have clients, some of whom can be just as demanding and picky as any traditional manager. You can have a lot more control over who you work for, although in the early days you may find yourself working for whoever is willing to pay. How can you know what your manager will be like in advance of starting? You may be thinking this is all fine and good, but how do I know what my manager will be like before I actually start working for him/her? Interviews are stressful, so people often forget that theyâre supposed to be a two-way street. You need to find out if a role is right you, so this a valuable time to ask about management styles. Here are some examples of questions you could ask at the end of an interview: How do you feel the company values are reflected in the style of management? Would you describe the management style as consistent across senior staff, or do people tend to have their own styles of managing? Is the day to day management of staff more hands-on or hands-off in your opinion? I also always suggest that interviewees reach out to employees working at their level because they will tend to get honest answers. The last company I worked for arranged some 10-minute chats with employees at my level after the official interview, which were far more useful for judging the office atmosphere. Another thing to remember is that there will be more choice in a bigger organisation. If youâre relatively junior it might be possible to swap teams or managers if itâs not working out, or try out a few areas of the business before you find the manager you really click with. In a small business, you will not have that level of flexibility, so be sure you like the style of leadership and management before accepting a job in a small team. Final thoughts Iâve had some good managers and some bad managers. The thing is though, what made them good or bad for me might be the complete opposite for you. Make sure you know what management style suits you best, and keep that in mind when choosing your next role. Author Bio:
